Avastin is an important drug that helps treat cancer, especially tumors of the brain or cancers in the kidney, lung, colon and rectum. The generic name of this drug is Bevacizumab. It interferes with the growth of the cells causing cancer and decreases the rate at which they spread in the body. It is important to note that Avastin is often used in combination with other cancer treatment drugs. This drug is usually administered as an injection and only in clinical settings by a trained medical professional. The medication is especially recommended and prescribed for patients with non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer, which is locally advanced, unresectable, metastic, or recurrent.
Description of Avastin:
Bevacizumab is an antibody that binds vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and prevents the interaction of VEGF with its receptors. This interaction between VEGF and the receptors leads to cell growth in the in vitro models of angiogenesis, which is prevented by this drug. The vivo models of angiogenesis witness an inhibition produced by this drug, which again prevents cell multiplication or cell growth that is vital to the spread of cancer. This is a sterile, slightly opalescent solution infused intravenously into patients.

When using Avastin, make sure that you regularly test your blood pressure and urine to avoid any harmful side effects.
Pregnant and lactating women should consult the doctor before using this drug as it may interact adversely with the unborn or newborn baby.
Seek immediate medical help if you suffer from excessive and sudden bleeding, blood in the urine, coughing or vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, numbness, and weakness.
