Depo-Provera Information

Depo-Provera is a contraceptive which is administered as a shot to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 months. While it is just another form of contraception, it is very important for us to know the benefits and risks involved in using this drug.

Description of Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera is a hormone which is similar to progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone which is produced by the ovaries. It is a shot given in the arm, hip, upper thigh or the stomach. This hormone injection can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 months after getting the shot.

Depo-Provera shot is given once-in-three months. It does not show visible signs and therefore you can keep it private. It also does not require you to have any supplies at home. It is a non-invasive procedure and therefore the treatment doesn't take too long.

Administration and Treatment of Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera contains synthetically produced progesterone and no estrogen. Once the Depo-Provera shot releases large amounts of progesterone into the system, it prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. It then thickens the cervical mucus and changes the lining of the uterus. This makes it difficult for the sperm to enter the uterus and if it does, it cannot survive in the uterus. All these changes together stop fertilization and thus prevents pregnancy.

  3. A medical history of blood clots
  4. Strokes
  5. Known or suspected pregnancy
  6. Bleeding from the vagina for an unknown reason
  7. Hypersensitivity (allergy) to the ingredients of the Depo-Provera.
It is also important to inform your doctor if you have breast cancer in your family, breast abnormalities, kidney dysfunction, if your menstrual periods are irregular or scanty, rising blood pressure, asthma, migraines, if your family is diabetic, epilepsy and if you are on anti-depressants or any kind of prescription drugs. It is important to remember that Depo-Provera is a contraceptive injection and it does not provide protection from SDAs, diseases which are sexually transmitted or HIV Aids. Depo-Provera has some serious health hazards. It is important to understand the long term side effects of this drug before making a choice. Depo-Provera should be used for longer than two years only if other methods of contraception are not satisfactory. The following are the risks:
  1. Loss of calcium from the bones: Use of the drug may lead to loss of calcium from the bones. The longer the drug is used, the more calcium you lose. The risk of bone weakening goes up along with it your risk of osteoporosis and broken bones later in life, especially after menopause. There is an increased risk of bone weakening if you are a teenager.
  2. Menstrual bleeding becomes irregular: You may have unpredictable bleeding or spotting in the first year of use of the drug. There may be an increase or decrease in the bleeding and in some cases it may stop completely.
  3. Increased risk of cancer is possible in women under 35 years of age.
  4. Unexpected pregnancy leading to neonatal complications.
  5. Allergic reaction: Blood clots, shortness of breath, chest pains are some of the reactions to the drug.
