Eligard is used for reducing the amount of testosterone in the patient’s body so that advanced prostate cancer can be treated. It is associated with GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone), a naturally produced hormone which influences the release of estrogen and testosterone in the body. The generic name of the drug is Leuprolide and it belongs to the category of antineoplastics. One of the most important things you should know about Eligard is that this medicine is to be used only by men, not women and children.
Description of Eligard:
You can buy Eligard in the form of an injection which is given into the patient’s muscle or under the skin. Initially, your doctor will give you one Eligard 7.5mg injection once a month. The injection provides release of the required constituents for a long period of time. While taking Eligard, you should make sure that the site of injection is changed from time to time in order to avoid any localized side effects. As this drug may also increase your risk of heart attacks and strokes, he/she will also monitor your heart condition. Your doctor may also need to conduct special tests if you are suffering from asthma, epilepsy, heart or kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or if you have a history of depression, heart attack or stroke. You should also tell your doctor if you have an allergy to leuprolide or goserelin, histrelin, nafarelin, or buserelin. You should also inform him/her if you are taking any other medications at present, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal products and health supplements.
Some of the rare but serious side effects of Eligard include rapid weight gain, sudden headache accompanied by vision problems, fainting or vomiting, chest tightness, sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, or pain in the chest spreading to the shoulder or arm. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should immediately seek medical help.
