Description:
Emla Cream is prepared specifically for children. It's a perfect remedy for those painful injections. A combination of 2.5% of lidocaine and prilocaine each, Emla Cream acts as local or topical anesthetic.Directions for Use
Wash the area to be treated with soapy water and rub off the impurities or dirt or oil in that area with a washcloth. Two hours prior to a procedure Emla cream should be applied on that area. Apply the cream at least a quarter inch in thickness and up to half an inch surrounding the area to be treated. Saran wrap should be used to cover the area so that the thickness of cream remains undisturbed. Leakage of the cream through the bandage can be avoided by securing tape on and around it.Side Effects
Studies show that paleness of skin or pallor or blanching was seen in 37% of people. 30% had redness, 7% had a changed ability in feeling heat or cold. Swelling affected 6% of people, 2% were affected with itching and less than 1% had rashes at the area where Emla Cream was applied. However, these side effects were mild in nature and vanished in one or two hours. People who have a history of sensitivity to local anaesthetics with any component or by-product of amide, lidocaine or prilocaine should not be administered the Emla Cream. Children with congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia should not be administered with Emla Cream. Children undergoing treatment with metheglobin inducing agents should not be treated with it as well. Longer duration of Emla Cream on the skin might cause methemoglobinemia. It is also not recommended to use Emla Cream on large areas for a long time.Uses
* Emla cream is a pretreatment medication for infiltration anaesthesia, as well as for superficial minor surgery for genital mucous membranes.
* Generally, it can be safely administered on children and infants of 37 weeks or more gestational age.
* The application of Emla Cream on the skin creates numbness on the applied area and thereby the sensation of pain is decreased. Therefore, it is used before administering injections or performing minor surgeries.
* Patients can use Emla Cream on the same area without any problem, as it does not cause permanent numbness of the skin. The numbness remains in the applied area for around an hour.
