Description
Euflexxa (Generic name: Hyaluronate Sodium) is a prescription drug and is used for the treatment of osteoarthritis knee pain. Euflexxa is usually prescribed when the patient has not responded well to other treatments. This drug is similar to the Synovial fluid found naturally in the joints. Euflexxa is injected into the knee joint and plays the role of a shock absorber and a lubricant and replaces the Synovial fluid. It is instrumental in alleviating knee pain associated with osteoarthritis.
How Euflexxa Works
Euflexxa is essentially a derivate of hyaluronic acid and acts as a shock absorber and lubricant as well as enhances the efficacy of the of the knee joint fluid. It may also be used for other medical conditions; as prescribed by the physician.
Facts about Euflexxa Injections
Sodium Hyaluronate is administered as an injection in the knee joint; at least once a week; for a total of three weeks. It replenishes the Hyaluronic Acid; found naturally in healthy knee joints and as a cushioning and shock absorber. This is called “viscosupplementation”; which aids in restoration of normal joint movement as well as pain relief. It is advised to abstain from any kind of strenuous physical activity for at least for 48 hours; following the injection. Patients, who have an infection in their knee joint or skin infection around the knee area, should not be given Euflexxa injections.
Side Effects
A few common to possible side effects of Euflexxa may include headache, swelling or pain on the site of injection, skin irritation, tenderness or pain in the knees, joint pain or feeling of numbness or tingling. A few serious side effects could also include an allergic reaction characterized by swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face; hives, or difficulty in breathing.
