Gemzar Information

Gemzar is an anti-cancer chemotherapy drug. It is used to treat cancer of the pancreas, non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, ovarian cancer, and metastatic breast cancer. The active ingredient in Gemzar is gemcitabine, which is a chemotherapy medicine known as a cytotoxic antimetabolite. It is generally given in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to those patients whose cancer returns in spite of treatment. In metastatic cancer, the cancer spreads to other healthy cells of the body, and Gemzar is given to those patients for whom surgery is not possible.

Description of Gemzar

Gemzar is given intravenously. It is to be injected, and it takes about 30 minutes to do so. The drug is either given alone or in combination with other chemotherapy drugs depending on the kind of cancer being treated.

Advantages of Gemzar

Patients buy Gemzar when other drugs fail to contain the cancerous cells.

  1. In cases of advanced ovarian cancer, Gemzar is used to treat the metastasized cells that are not responsive to chemotherapy.
  2. Gemzar is given to breast cancer patients after breast surgery and other unsuccessful forms of chemotherapy.
  3. It is also used to treat inoperable non-small cell lung cancer that has spread to the nearby tissues.

How Gemzar works

Cancer is characterized by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division. In a normal environment, cells stop multiplying once they come into contact with similar cells. This ability, known as “inhibition”, is not present for cancerous cells. Gemzar belongs to a group of medicines known as antimetabolites. They help prevent cell growth and multiplication, thus causing the cells to die. Unfortunately, the drug cannot distinguish between healthy cells and cancerous cells. However, it has a greater effect on the cells that are dividing rapidly and therefore, the cancer cells are more affected by the drug. Since the healthy cells are also affected, Gemzar causes some side effects. It affects the bone marrow where the blood cells are made. Since the production of blood cells is decreased, it leaves the patient susceptible to infections.

Safety & Precautionary Information

Before you buy Gemzar, it is important to inform your doctor if you are suffering from:

  1. Kidney disease
  2. Liver disease
  3. Decreased levels of white blood cells, a condition also known as neutropenia
  4. History of hepatitis
  5. History of alcoholism

Gemzar is not advised for pregnant women. Ensure that you do not conceive while you are taking the drug. Use contraceptive methods to avoid conception. It is not known if Gemzar passes through breast milk. In case you are breastfeeding, it is essential that you consult the doctor before starting Gemzar treatment.

Gemzar can interact with various other medicines such as chickenpox vaccines, polio vaccines, rotavirus vaccines, smallpox vaccines, yellow fever vaccines, MMR vaccines, BCG vaccines, NSAIDs, and salicyclates.
