Orthovisc Description

Orthovisc is one of the safest treatments available for the problem of osteoarthritis. This drug is injected straight into the problematic knee joint of the patient to help increase the lubrication of the knee joint and provide relief from pain. Orthovisc is a sterile thick mixture that is obtained from a naturally occurring substance in the human body - Hyaluronan.

Orthovisc is created from well purified Hyalonan, which is dissolved in saline. This substance is present in the fluids that are found in and around the different joints in the human body. Every joint requires a lubricant for proper and smooth functioning of the body parts and Orthovisc is an extremely pure Hyaluronan, that is used for the same purpose.

How it Works

Orthovisc is administered by the doctor directly in the affected knee and it helps to re-establish the cushioning characteristics of the joint fluid. A single dose of the Orthovisc injection provides relief from knee pain for up to 6 months. Like any other medical product in its class, Orthovisc is always administered as an injection. The medical practitioner will administer Orthovisc into your knee one time in a week, for a total of 3 or 4 injections. This Orthovisc drug can be injected in the doctor's office. All drug injections should be performed by a doctor who has specialist and medical training. The doctor must have a medical qualification. This is important, as he must know the right place for the injection. Sometime people who are untrained inject in places which are not ideal for the injection. This results in pain, infection and swelling.

Precautions

Here are some precautions that need to be taken while taking Orthovisc injections. A person who is allergic to certain or all hyaluronate products should never take Orthovisc injections or any other form of the product. If you have any allergy to bird products like eggs, feathers and poultry, you should avoid this product. Avoid having an Orthovisc injection in the knee if you suffer from skin diseases or infections around the site of injection.

Hyaluronan is a weight polysaccharide (high molecular), which contains repeating disaccharide units of N-acetylglucosamine and sodium glucuronate.

Each dosage has these items in a 2ml solution in a syringe: Hyaluronan 30mg, Sodium Chloride 18mg, water for injection q.s. up to 2.0ml. there are no synthetic additives added in ORTHOVISC.

Side Effects

There are some possible side effects that may occur when taking this drug. The patient should immediately inform the doctor if he or she is experiencing any kind of side effects such as: difficulty in breathing; trouble swallowing; swelling of the face, tongue, lips or hives. Other not very serious side effects may also result. The patient should talk to the doctor if they experience temporary swelling/pain of the affected joint, infection/rash of the site of injection, or body ache. Female patients should avoid this product if they are pregnant or nursing a baby.
