Paragard Information:
Paragard is a copper intrauterine device (IUD) used by women to prevent pregnancy. Its generic name is copper. This device can be used for a long period of time, even as long as up to 10 years. It is highly effective in preventing a pregnancy and has fewer side effects than many oral contraceptives.
Description of Paragard:
Paragard is in the shape of a âTâ and is made of flexible copper and plastic. The arms and stems, which are of plastic, are wrapped with copper. Two thin threads are attached to the bottom of this device. The threads make the device easy to locate and remove Paragard when needed. You should, however, let only a qualified health professional insert this device in your uterus.
Advantages of Paragard:
There are many distinct advantages of this contraceptive. Some of the reasons why you should buy Paragard if you want to prevent a pregnancy are:
- Paragard is easy to use and starts working as soon as it is inserted into your uterus.
- You are not required to visit your doctor for a routine check. You can do a self-check once a month to ensure that the device is in the right place. The patient instruction leaflet included with the product contains instructions about this.
- Paragard is highly effective in preventing a pregnancy. The effectiveness rate of this device is over 90%.
- Paragard can be safely used for long periods of time. Studies show that this device is safe to use without any decrease in its efficacy for up to 10 years.
- It is a cost-effective contraceptive.
How Paragard Works:
This contraceptive primarily works by killing the sperm before it fertilizes the ovaries. In case the egg becomes fertilized, Paragard prevents it from implanting itself in the uterus. Like other intrauterine devices, Paragard does not put a stop to ovulation.
Safety & Precautionary Information:
You should not buy Paragard if:
- You have an allergy to copper or if you have Wilson's disease, an inherited disorder characterized by excess copper in the body.
- You suffer from a cervical infection or cervical cancer.
- You suffer from uterine cancer.
- You are pregnant.
- You recently had an abortion.
- You suffer from genital bleeding due to unknown reasons.
Before you buy Paragard, you need to be aware that this device does not provide protection against HIV, AIDS, or other diseases that are sexually transmitted. This device may cause some side effects, especially during the first few months of use. In the initial few months, you may experience longer or heavier periods. Mild pain or cramps at the site where this IUD is placed may also occur till your body gets used to Paragard. You can expect these side effects to subside considerably, both in frequency and intensity, within 2-3 months. Contact your doctor if the side effects worsen or persist beyond the expected time limit.
