Plan-B Information

Plan-B is an over-the-counter emergency contraceptive that helps prevent a pregnancy after unprotected sex. It consists of two tablets that are meant to be taken one after the other, with the second pill being taken after a gap of 12 hours post the first dose. Plan-B can prevent a pregnancy when used within 72 hours of sexual intercourse. It is also commonly known as a “morning after pill” as women often buy Plan-B after a night of unprotected sex. The active ingredient used in Plan-B is levonorgestrel. However, it is only effective if you are not already pregnant, and it will not help terminate a pregnancy.

Description of Plan-B

Plan-B comes in a pack of two tablets. You can take it within 72 hours of having sex. A newer version called Plan-B One-Step is also available, and it consists of only one tablet instead of the two pills that make up Plan-B. The sooner the pill is taken after unprotected sex, the more effective the drug is.

Advantages of Plan-B

When you buy Plan-B, your problems are solved with the help of just two tablets. It is one of the few medicines that can be purchased without a prescription if you are over 18 years of age. The greatest advantage is that it is the most convenient way of terminating an unwanted pregnancy. Plan-B can be taken when you forget to take another contraceptive pill or when a condom breaks during sex. It is not an abortion pill and is safe to use.

How Plan-B works

Plan-B contains a high level of levonorgestrel. This is a progesterone-type hormone which is found in most birth control pills. It prevents pregnancy by stopping the process of ovulation, which is when the eggs mature and they are released from the ovaries. In case ovulation has already taken place, Plan-B prevents fertilization of the egg by the sperm. In case fertilization has already taken place, the drug prevents the egg from attaching itself to the uterus wall. It does so by changing the lining of the uterine wall. However, if a fertilized egg has already attached to the uterine wall, then pregnancy is imminent. The pill will not terminate a pregnancy that is already under way.

Safety and Precautionary Information

It is important to know that Plan-B is meant to be used only in cases of emergency. It is not to be used as a regular method of contraception. It will not terminate a pregnancy and should not be taken once pregnancy has been confirmed. Plan-B will not provide any protection against HIV, AIDS, or sexually transmitted diseases. The drug can increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Plan-B can interact with certain medicines like barbiturates, seizure medications, etc. In case you are already on medications, then you must inform the doctor about this.

Composition

Plan-B consists mainly of levonorgestrel.
