Supartz Description

Supartz is also known as Artzal outside of the USA. For futher clarification, please visit the manufacturer's web site by clicking here. Artzal is the exactly the same as Supartz, and is simply marketed under a different name internationally by the same manufacturer, Seikagaku.

Also known as Artzal outside the USA, Supartz is a solution made up of a naturally occurring substance in the human body - Hyaluronan. It is made of highly sterile Sodium Hyaluronate, and it is found naturally in the tissues of the body joints. It is also found in the Synovial Fluid that fills up the various body joints. The naturally present Hyaluronan acts as an excellent lubricant and a shock absorber for a body joint. People who are suffering from Osteoarthritis suffer from joint pain as well. This happens when the synovial fluid loses its capability to lubricate and protect the affected joints.

Some facts about Supartz

Supartz is a therapy and not a drug. Supartz joint fluid therapy has gained a lot of support worldwide. Since its launch in 1983, more than 150 million Supartz injections have been sold. It is the first joint fluid therapy that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") in 1987. It has shown very effective results for the treatment of OA knee pain.

In a 1996 study, Supartz Joint Fluid Therapy produced clinically important results, which were described by the author as the "equivalent of a doubled maximum walking distance combined with a complete loss of night pain."

An important thing about Supartz to make note of is that the dosage contains a greater amount of active ingredients in each treatment cycle than any other therapy for the same problem of OA. This has shown positive results and has proven to be more effective.

Directions for the usage of Supartz

The medical practitioner gives the patient a Supartz injection in the quantity of 25mg or 2.5ml once a week. This continues for 5 weeks and the patient at times may be given a small dosage of a local anesthetic so that they do not feel uncomfortable after receiving the injection.

Supartz, in some cases, has been found to delay knee replacement surgery. It can only delay surgery, as its main goal is to give relief from pain and provide some amount of lubrication to the affected body joint. With Supartz, patients start to experience some relief with the first two injections. The full cycle of 5 injections over a period of 5 weeks, completely relieves the patient from pain. Every patient is different therefore the level of pain relief experienced will vary from patient to patient. Right after the injection and the following 48 hours, it would be wise for the patient to avoid activities such as tennis, jogging, standing for long or even heavy lifting.

All injections must be done by a practitioner who has medical and specialist training. The practitioner must be medically qualified.

Precautions

Some precautions are needed while on the Supartz therapy. Do not use it if you find any kind of leakage or damage to the pack. This may cause infection, which could be transferred to your tissues upon injection. A syringe is intended for only one use and the content of the Supartz syringe must be immediately used when opened.
