Synvisc Manufacturer:
GenzymeDescription
Synvisc is available in the form of a solution and is used for the treatment of pain in patients who have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee. Synvisc solution is classified as a visco supplement. It plays the role of a lubricant and a shock absorber; thereby facilitating normal functioning of the joints. The solution is injected into the knee in order to alleviate pain associated with osteoarthritis. This medicine requires a valid doctor’s prescription. Synvisc may also be prescribed for other medical conditions; as specified by the physician. Following the prescribed dosage and procedural frequency is strongly advised in order to achieve maximum benefits. It is also recommended to abstain from strenuous activity following an injection; unless advised otherwise by your physician. How Synvisc Works
As a visco supplement; Synvisc solution works by substituting the thick or viscous fluid, called the synovial fluid that is found naturally in the joints. In Osteoarthritis; the normal fluid of the joints; becomes thinner and the knee joint does not receive the required cushioning and lubrication. The cartilage and the knee joint receive the required lubrication coating and protection when Synvisc solution is injected into the knee; thereby reducing the pain associated with osteoarthritis. Synvisc is usually administered after every 1 week and a total course of 3 injections are given; unless directed otherwise by the physician. While different patients respond differently to the medication; most patients experience pain relief for up to 6 months.Synvisc has a good safety profile and is generally well tolerated and entails minimal safety risks. Furthermore; treatment with Synvisc may also obviate the need for knee replacement or arthroscopic surgery as well as steroid injections which are only instrumental in inflammation reduction.
