Synvisc is used for treating pain in patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. Its generic name is hylan G-F 20, and it belongs to the category of Hyaluronic Acid drugs. It acts as a shock absorber and lubricant in the joint, thus helping the knee move smoothly. This in turn decreases joint pain. Description of Synvisc:
Synvisc is an elastoviscous fluid (with high molecular weight) that contains hylan B and hylan A polymers created from chicken combs. Hylans are derived from Hyaluronan. The unique feature of hylan G-F 20 lies in the fact that it has chemically crosslinked Hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is a long-chain polymer that contains repeating disaccharide units of Na-glucuronate-Nacetylglucosamine.

How Synvisc Works:
Synvisc injection is directly administered into the intra-articular space within the knee. This visco supplement substitutes the synovial fluid that is found naturally in the joints. Since the normal fluid of the joints becomes thinner in patients suffering from osteoarthritis, the knee joint are unable to get the required lubrication and cushioning. However, when Synvisc solution is injected into the knee, adequate lubrication coating and protection is provided to the cartilage and the knee joint, thus decreasing the pain caused by osteoarthritis.
The dosage of this drug is based on the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment. Synvisc is usually administered every one week, and it may take up to three injections before the full benefits are obvious. Six injections to be administered within 6 months is the maximum recommended dosage, where a minimum gap of four weeks should be maintained in between treatment schedules. The response to the medication varies from patient to patient, but most patients report experiencing relief from pain for a maximum of 6 months.
Safety and Precautionary Information:
Patients who are known to be allergic to Hyaluronan (Sodium Hyaluronate) preparations should not be treated with Synvisc. This medication should not be administered to patients with skin diseases or knee joint infections or infections in the region of the injection site.
Synvisc should not be injected intravascularly, extra-articularly, into intra-articular ligaments, or into capsular or synovial tissue. Since this medication has not been tested in children below 18 years as well as pregnant and lactating women, it’s advisable not to ask them to buy Synvisc.
Though a serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare, some patients may experience side effects like headache, fast/pounding heartbeat, back pain, pain in the injected joint, and/or swelling, warmth, redness, or bruising at the injection site.
