Tasigna Manufacturer:
NovartisTasigna Information:
Tasigna is a cancer medication used to treat certain types of blood cancers. It is specifically prescribed to patients who have been newly diagnosed with chronic Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML). The generic name of the drug is Nilotinib. It belongs to the pharmacologic group of drugs known as kinase inhibitors. Tasigna is a prescription drug, which means you should consult your doctor before you buy Tasigna.
Description of Tasigna:
Nilotinib, an active ingredient in Tasigna, is an anti-cancer medicine known as protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It is available in the form of a capsule. The medication is available in two different strengths: Tasigna 150mg and Tasigna 200mg capsules.
Advantages of Tasigna:
The drug only works on cancerous cells because they are the only cells that carry abnormal tyrosine kinase. It does not have any effect on growth of other normal cells in human body.
Cancer patients who have not responded to other treatments or who cannot tolerate other treatments such as Imatinib can greatly benefit from the use of this drug.
How Tasigna Works:
The drug targets the abnormal protein (‘Bcr-Abl’ kinase) which is produced by the abnormal Philadelphia chromosome. The medication blocks the protein that boosts cancerous cell multiplication and controls the spread of cancer cells. The medication works similarly to GLEEVEC, which is an anti-cancer drug. One of the advantages of using Tasigna is it binds some of the mutations of the Bcr-Abl protein which cause resistance to GLEEVEC.
You doctor may ask you to take 300 mg of Nilotinib twice a day or 400 mg of Nilotinib twice a day. You may be required to take 2 capsules in the morning and 2 capsules in the evening of the recommended strength depending on the doctor’s prescription.
Safety & Precautionary Information:
You should not take Tasigna with food as doing so may increase the probability of side effects. You should take the medication one hour prior to having your food or 2 hours after eating food. You should maintain a time gap of 12 hours between two dosages of the medication. The drug may not be the right medication for people with certain medical conditions. You should not take the drug if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or if you have low levels of potassium and magnesium in your blood. You should also not take Tasigna if you have a medical history of suffering from Long QT syndrome, heart disease, or liver disease.
Patients who are taking Tasigna should avoid eating grapefruit in any form. The fruit can increase the quantity of specific medicines in bloodstream, which may cause side effects. The medicine may potentially interact with other medications and cause mild, moderate, or severe side effects. Therefore, you should tell your doctor about every medicine you are taking to reduce the risk of drug interactions and potential side effects.
